You think you’re not a scarf person. You think your neck does a good job of keeping itself warm. Then you see Bird & Knoll and your whole life before this has been a lie. Sure that’s a little dramatic, but we re-watched Titanic  last night and are still riding that tidal wave of emotion all the way to the shore like a six year old on a foam boogie board. But a quick scroll through the Bird & Knoll hashtag mantra #justaddascarf and you’ll see what we’re on about.

Macayla Chapman and Natalie Knoll started Bird & Knoll in 2013, and now run the photography-meets-fashion label from two ends of the Tasman Sea – Chapman in Auckland and Knoll in Sydney. They met at their kid’s swimming lessons – was it some sort of super squad that trains kids to swim across the Tasman Sea? We call child cruelty! Or at least we demand a super dooper reward when they towel off at the other side. But really (and more logically), they met while they both lived in Sydney, and bonded poolside over a mutual appreciation of one another’s style. Then Chapman packed up for Auckland, but their business idea flourished through Skype, Dropbox and email communications every day.

Bird & Knoll’s SS14 collection is out this week, so it’s with a celebratory freeze-frame fist pump a la The Breakfast Club that Chapman and Knoll are giving two lucky winners the chance to choose a scarf from the new collection to have as their own. Check out the new range here – from Peru and Lombok, to Venice and Istanbul – and put your name in the hat below to win.

To win your choice of cashmere-blend scarf from Bird & Knoll (worth $298 each), simply tell us in 25 words or less: “What is the fashion piece you couldn’t live without, and why?”

Our names are… Macayla (nickname Bird) and Natalie (last name Knoll) and we are in the business of… creating wanderlust with our beautiful cashmere-blend scarves digitally printed with travel photographs. We got the idea when… Nat was lying on a sun lounger in Hawaii wondering how she could blend her love of fashion, travel and photography and won’t stop making these babies until we can’t travel anymore. The high point from Bird & Knoll so far has been… seeing a stylish fashionista on the streets wearing one of our scarves looking super-elegant – love it! If we had to play favourites, our favourite piece from the collection is… ok, ok, Very Venetian for Nat, featuring a stunning image of the Bridge of Sighs in Venice, and for Macayla, the bright pops of colour on Turkish Cinderella. Our favourite relaxing destination is… Santorini (Nat) and Mexico (Macayla) but for adventure, we go to the concrete jungle, NYC baby! (Nat) and her own backyard, Wanaka, New Zealand (Macayla). Our number one travel tip is… don’t forget your Bird & Knoll scarf – perfect as a wrap on the plane, a sarong at the pool, a headscarf … the list goes on. One album or book we couldn’t jet set without is… we are loving Sam Smith and the Madden Brothers currently – good travel music. Macayla has been dying to read The Beautiful Fall by Alicia Drake for ages so will be taking it to Fiji for her next holiday. Our biggest inspiration is… travel of course!
