Gia Coppola (grandchild of Francis Ford Coppola and niece of Sofia) makes her directorial debut with this keenly observed portrait of adolescence. The film is an adaptation of a series of short stories by James Franco, who has a supporting role. Interweaving storylines focus on a group of California teens as they navigate the fraught terrain between innocence and experience. Shy, sensitive April (Emma Roberts) falls prey to the charms of her soccer coach Mr. B (Franco). Teddy (Jack Kilmer) spirals into chaos under the influence of self-destructive best friend Fred (Nat Wolff). Meanwhile, promiscuous loner Emily (Zoe Levin) seeks validation through numerous sexual encounters.
