When one of their classic comedy sketches dies on the stage, raucous raconteurs the Golden Phung must traverse the nine layers of Sketch Comedy Hell to resurrect it… with hell-arious results!
As they descend deeper, they must ask themselves, can a dead joke be resuscitated and given new life? Can it be saved by adding a new twist, perspective or fart sound effect? Is there such thing as too many rhetorical questions? No?
In each layer of Sketch Comedy Hell, The Golden Phung add to their sketch comedy arsenal, until they emerge ready to perform their original sketch – the one that died in the first place – now with a new understanding of the cogs and gears that make a joke work. Surely this new sketch will be funnier than ever, not an unworkable Frankenstein’s monster, staggering under the weight of its own self-referentialism? We can only hope!
This show is our love letter to sketch comedy; it’s tropes and conventions that we both love and love-to-hate, and all the little quirks that go into this near-dead quasi-art-form, that many people attempt but few master.
