CAROL: Win tickets to see Carol, coming to cinemas on January 14.
Two women from very different backgrounds find themselves in the throes of love in Carol. The romance is set against a New York backdrop, circa 1950s, a time when relationships were idealised and ritualised.
As conventional norms of the time challenge their undeniable attraction, an honest story emerges to reveal the resilience of the heart in the face of change. This is a relationship strengthened by the times and the courage of those involved.
A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (played by Rooney Mara), is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett). Carol is an alluring woman who feels trapped in a loveless, yet convenient marriage. An immediate connection sparks between them and the innocence of their first encounter dims and, over time, their connection deepens.
It is not an easy relationship on all levels but one. While Carol must break free from the confines of marriage, her husband (played by Kyle Chandler) threatens her competence as a mother. The threat deepens as Carol’s involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby (Sarah Paulson) comes to light. As Carol leaves the comfort of home to travel with Therese, she not only enjoys an outward trip but also an internal journey of self-discovery coincides with her new sense of space.
Carol is being released by Transmission Films in cinemas on January 14. Carol is a 2015 British-American romantic drama film directed by Todd Haynes, from a screenplay by Phyllis Nagy based on the novel The Price of Salt (also known as Carol) by Patricia Highsmith.
The movie was in development for more than 11 years by British producers of Number 9 Films and Film4 Productions. Carol is co-produced by New York-based Killer Films and is shot on Super 16mm. Principal photography began in March 2014, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and lasted just 34 days. Carol was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, where Mara tied for the Best Actress award. The film has received critical acclaim. It opened in November, 2015 in America and the United Kingdom.
