It also captures one of the greatest tragedies in Everest history – when a huge block of ice crashed down onto the climbing route, killing 16 Sherpas during the 2014 climbing season.
For the Himalayan workers repeatedly traversing the mountain carrying supplies, the risk of this hazardous endeavor is multiplied.
A story of family and tradition shot by high-altitude cinematographer Renan Ozturk, Sherpa explores the unequal relationship between cashed-up foreign expeditions and their guides.
Watch the trailer for Sherpa, which was recently nominated for Best Documentary at the British Film and Television Awards and is released in Australian cinemas on March 31.
