WIN! YPT’s take on Romeo and Juliet

With an exciting new lighting bar upgrade, Newcastle’s Young Peoples Theatre (YPT) will be presenting it’s next production, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet this month.

Directed by Nicholas Thoroughgood, a bright young director known for his interesting and dynamic take on well known productions, this version highlights the violence and brutality of the original story and analyses the problems and triumphs of the human condition.

“Rehearsing this play has been a process of slow discovery,” he said.

“Even now we continue to find new aspects and ask new questions.”

Utilising forms and styles from Bertolt Brecht and the Aburdisum movement this production challenges audiences to peer behind the veil of the fourth wall.

Nicholas believes the show would be excellent for students studying senior drama at high school or the Shakespearian text in
English.

Back performing to a live audience, after successfully streaming shows throughout the pandemic, YPT is excited to welcome patrons to the theatre with this classic play.

Larissa Barwell (Assistant Director and Lighting Designer), Madeline Newland (Assistant Director) and Ashleigh Cox (Production Assistant) are also helping to bring this show to life alongside a cast of 19 talented YPT students, tutors and adult members.

Newcastle Weekly has one double pass to the play to give away. The play opens this Friday and will run until 5 March.
