Opera Australia launches a new initiative at Sydney's historic Cockatoo Island, a former meeting place for the Eora Nation, now littered with the relics of the city's shipbuilding past and its heritage as a penal colony. Opening with Bizet's ubiquitous opera, the company promises spectacle with motorbike stunts and, of course, fireworks. The venue – accessible by ferry – also features pop-up bars and eateries. Liesel Badorrek's production is conducted by Tahu Matheson and has two good-looking casts: Carmen Topic and Sian Sharp as Carmen, Roberto Arnica and Diego Torre as DonJosé, Daniel Sumegi and Alexander Weston as Escamillo, and Danita Weatherstone and Rebecca Gulinello as Micaëla.
