Win a Vinyl Copy of AOTW "Waving At My Girl"

"Waving to My Girl" is the debut album of Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Winten, filled with folk ballads and evocative rock songs.

Many of these songs were written at a time when Winten worked late nights at a CBD cinema. Her music mirrors the venue's transporting effect, drawing listeners into a widescreen world. Here are vivid scenes of lost love, self-discovery, growth, and family bonds.

In a recent talk with Music Feeds, Winten shared more about the items and experiences that guided her during the album's creation. One influence was her 1966 Guild Starfire guitar. Winten says "I immediately fell in love when I played it for the first time – it sounds like honey and has a huge amount of character. I think it really helped me to connect with myself." Another source of inspiration was a book by David Whyte called 'Consolations.' There's one passage in particular: 'Gratitude is not a passive response to something we have been given; gratitude arises from paying attention, from being awake in the presence of everything that lives within and without us.' It's a poignant text that echoes in the songwriter's own attentive art-making.

Outside of music, Winten is a skilled photographer and filmmaker. Her collaborations with artists like Angie McMahon, Maple Glider, and Hannah McKittrick show an ability to capture the essence of a moment, and a gift for framing compelling stories. These qualities also shine in Winten's songs, imbuing the album with perceptive insights and emotional resonance.
