American percussionist, conductor and author Steven Schick heads to the Australian National Academy of Music this month for a residency.

Speaking to Limelight’s Maddy Briggs in the September 2025 issue, Schick unravels the musical philosophy that will inform his ANAM residency. “So much of my life is spent in a practice room, wondering why my left hand doesn’t do what I want it to do – these very first person-driven problems. And so, having given up on the idea of being a physician in service of other people and then becoming a musician in service of yourself, or your art at the very least, meant that I engendered a debt that I have to pay off in musical currency.”
