AOTW Giveaway: The Gnomes
The Gnomes' self-titled debut captures the energy of Frankston's garage scene with a blast of 1960s beat-influenced rock and roll. Originally the solo bedroom project of Jay Millar, the album came together with a full band featuring guitarist Ned Capp, bassist Olly Katsianis, and drummer Ethan Robins. It was recorded at Singing Bird Studios, a rehearsal space and venue at the heart of the city's music community.
Arrangements centre on dual guitars, jazz-inflected drum patterns played at speed, and harmonised vocals that echo The Kinks, The Easybeats, and early Beatles. 'I'll Be There' features Merseybeat chiming guitars, 'Flippin' Stomp' combines Monkees-style arrangements with Nuggets-era garage structures, while 'Won't Quit You' brings reverb-heavy surf tones.
The album follows from Millar's viral success with his solo I Like It EP, which gained over 50,000 views through Spanish garage-punk channels. This attention prompted him to form the band, drawing from the creativity of the Singing Bird scene. Released through Dog Meat Records, The Gnomes includes re-recorded versions of Millar's solo songs 'I Like It' and 'Open Your Eyes' alongside ten new tracks written for the new lineup.
