Hands across Australia competition 2010

HANDS ACROSS AUSTRALIA SCHOOL COMPETITION 2010

GenerationOne is a national movement which aims to inspire and engage every Australian, including our youngest citizens, to play their part in ending Indigenous disadvantage in one generation – this generation.

Hands Across Australia is GenerationOne’s catchy theme song.  GenerationOne together with the Australian School of Performing Arts (ASPA) invite all schools across Australia to learn the song, Hands Across Australia, and create a ‘video clip’ of their performance, including an original rap section. Schools will also design a project that aims to raise awareness and reduce Indigenous disadvantage in their community.

How to enter

1.Visit www.generationone.org.au, go to the competition entry page and download the Application Pack (available Monday 26 July, 2010).
2.Learn the song, then create and film your own vocal performance of Hands Across Australia, including an original rap section. Your version must be performed with the backing track provided or match the form of the sheet music provided.
3.Write a statement of 150 words or less detailing what your school is currently doing to raise awareness of Indigenous disparity and end Indigenous disadvantage.
4.Write a statement of 300 words or less outlining the project or program your school proposes to undertake if it wins the competition Education Award of $25,000. This statement must include a project description, timeline, cost estimate, an estimate of the number of Indigenous and non Indigenous people your proposed program is likely to reach and the method by which the program and its outcomes will be documented.
5.Submit your completed entry form, your ‘film clip’ and your statements to GenerationOne before 5.00pm Friday 10 September 2010 (AEST) by uploading to www.generationone.org.au or mailing to the address at the end of these terms and conditions. Entry is free.
Prizes

The winning school will receive a $25,000 Education Award to be used to implement its proposed project for the reduction of Indigenous disadvantage in their community.  Each State and Territory finalist will also receive a 1 day performing arts short course at their school presented by ASPA in conjunction with Indigenous artists. The short course may cover dance, funk and hip hop, rap, chant, singing and song writing, body percussion, hand drumming and beat boxing, and/or team building, leadership and social development through the arts.

Judging guidelines

Industry specialists selected by ASPA and GenerationOne will judge the competition according to the following guidelines:

1.Calibre of musical performance – entries might range from a sophisticated re-arrangement of the song for school ensembles to a very simple unison rendition by enthusiastic untrained singers.
2.Creative and thought provoking ‘rap’ – communicating the school’s stance on Indigenous disparity using meaningful or informative lyrics that will inspire action for change.
3.Entertaining presentation – the inclusion of creativity, colour and movement will be regarded well.
4.Your statement of 150 words or less detailing what your school is currently doing to raise awareness and address Indigenous disadvantage.
5.Your statement of 300 words or less detailing how your school proposes to use the $25,000 Education Award to help reduce Indigenous disadvantage, should you win the Hands Across Australia School Competition.
6.The answers given in an interview which will be held with each State and Territory finalist.
