Set in the Missouri Ozarks, in a destitute community controlled by a hillbilly drug cartel, 17-year-old Ree Dolly (Jennifer Lawrence) sets out to track down her father, who put their house up for his bail bond and then disappeared. Ree hacks through the lies, evasions and threats offered up by her relatives, and begins to piece together the truth about her family.
Deftly directed by Debra Granik (Down to the Bone) and driven by Jennifer Lawrence's riveting central performance, it is easy to see why Winter's Bone was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year, and is being talked up as an early Oscar contender.
