About the Pascall Prize
The Pascall Prize is awarded each year to a critic whose work over the previous 12 to 18 months.
The critic must have contributed significantly to public appreciation, enjoyment and understanding of the areas of the arts in which he or she is involved.
The winner of the Pascall prize is the Critic of the Year.
The Pascall Prize seeks annually to identify and reward a critic whose work:
stimulates interest in the subject;
expands knowledge about the subject;
arouses debate;
creates a vital, engaging voice in the culture through the expression of strong, considered opinion(s);
has intrinsic creative merit.

2011 APPLICATION GUIDELINES
The Prize
The current value of the Pascall Prize is $15,000(AUD). It may be spent in any way the winner
chooses. A person may win the prize only once.
Eligibility
Any person currently and regularly engaged in the practice of writing or broadcasting
critically about any branch of the arts is eligible for the Pascall Prize.
Work entered may relate to any aspect of the creative or performing arts, including so‐called
‘popular culture’. The word ‘arts’ is to be interpreted broadly so as to include, for example,
radio and television, photography, architecture and food and wine as well as literature,
visual arts and performing arts.
It is expected that the winner’s work will be published regularly via print, radio, television or
any other broadcast media, including the Internet. The winner should have a broad, nonspecialist
audience. The winner’s work should normally be published/broadcast/posted no
less frequently than monthly and should have appeared on at least 10 occasions in the
previous year.
Nomination
A critic may nominate him or herself, be nominated by his or her editor, or by any member
of the public. Members of the Pascall Board and the judging panel may also make
nominations.
Entry
Closing date is 5pm Friday 4th March 2011.

Article Publish Dates
Articles submitted must have been published or broadcast later that 1st August 2009 and at
least one of the articles must have been published and broadcast on or after 1st November
2010. The most recent piece of work should have been written or presented no less than
three months before the date of entry.

Accepted Nominations
The Pascall Board will receive all nominations and may reject any nominations that do not
fulfil the prize criteria.
Nominees
Nominees will be acknowledged that their work has been received and informed of the
outcome of the judging process and whether or not they are successful prior to the winner
announcement.
Judging
The Pascall Board will select a panel of judges. The judges will make their decision on the
basis of the work submitted and will choose a winner currently and regularly involved in the
practice of arts criticism. The winner’s principal occupation might be other than arts
criticism, including more general forms of writing or broadcasting, but the prize is for work
that offers an opinion on the arts.
Winner Selection
The winner will be notified by phone and email approximately one month before the public
announcement.
Winner Announcement
The winner will be announced at the end of the Pascall Debate. The Geraldine Pascall
Foundation will publish a newsletter on the next business day after the Pascall Debate.
Winner Obligations
The winner will be required to send the following documentation to the Geraldine Pascall
Foundation at least one week before the public announcement:
1. A high resolution portrait photograph
2. A soft copy of his / her biography
3. A prepared speech (2‐3minutes in duration) for delivery at the award ceremony at
the end of the Pascall Debate.
The winner is required to be available for interviews and, subject to consultation, for other
events deemed suitable by the Board for promotion of the Pascall Prize.
The winner should make all reasonable endeavours to be identified as the “Pascall Critic of
the Year” where suitable, such as in go‐lasts on pieces published in newspapers and
magazines, or when appearing on radio or television.
