Life’s Reflections Photographic Competition 2011



The following forms part of the Terms and Conditions. By signing and submitting the Entry Form, the Entrant agrees to the Terms and Conditions.
General Information
Life’s Reflections is an amateur photographic competition and exhibition run by the ACT Office for Ageing, on behalf of the ACT Department of Disability Housing and Community Services (the Department). The competition promotes positive ageing, healthy and active lifestyles, and intergenerational relationships through photography. A new theme, ‘Canberra as an Age-Friendly City’ seeks photographs promoting an awareness of age-friendly initiatives.
There are four entrant categories:
• Primary Students (Kindergarten – Year 6);
• Secondary Students (Year 7- Year 12 students, at the time of entering the competition);
• Open Amateur (Aged 18-59 years);
• Open Amateur - Seniors (Aged 60 years and over).
All finalists will receive a package of prizes, comprised of sponsor gift vouchers. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place in each category and for Encouragement Awards in one or more categories of the competition.
At the judges’ discretion, prizes may also be awarded for:
• Excellence in Participation by an ACT Primary School, High School or College;
• Excellence in Participation by an ACT Seniors Club or Community Organisation;
• Outstanding Contribution to the Competition; and/or
• Age-Friendly City Photographic Award – for exceptional photographs portraying ‘Canberra as an Age-Friendly City’ or promoting age-friendly initiatives in the ACT.
Eligibility
Entry is free and open to all ACT residents and those residing within 60 kilometres of the ACT border.
The following persons are ineligible to enter:
• Current and former members of the ACT Office for Ageing and immediate family;
• Current members of business units from the Governance Advocacy and Community Policy Branch of DHCS and their immediate family;
• Judges and their immediate family; and
• Professional photographers.
Tertiary-level photography students are eligible to enter in the ‘open’ category.
Theme
Photographs should depict at least one person aged 60 years or over and promote:
• Canberra as an Age-Friendly City or Age-Friendly initiatives in the ACT community.

• Positive ageing benefits and initiatives; or
• The benefits of healthy and active lifestyles for seniors; or
• The importance of intergenerational relationships in our community.
Photographic images promoting the theme, ‘Canberra as an Age-Friendly City’ or Age-Friendly initiatives in the ACT community, are particularly encouraged. These images could, for example, depict older persons using outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, housing or visually illustrating social participation, respect, social inclusion, civic participation, employment, communication, information, community or health services.
Entry requirements
• Entrants must submit a completed and signed Entry Form.
• Entrants are limited to a maximum of 3 photographs.
• Photographs must:
o be at least 21cm x 15cm (A5) up to a maximum 42cm x 30cm (A3) (photographs 30cm x 21cm (A4 size) are encouraged for display purposes);
o be printed on photographic paper;
o have been taken since 1 January 2010;
o may be taken using a film or digital camera; and
o be accompanied by a film negative or by a clearly labeled copy of the photograph on CD or DVD with at least 300 dpi resolution;
• Photographs:
o may be colour or black and white; and
o will preferably be mounted on firm white card for exhibition purposes, with a rigid protective cover.
• Photographs must not:
o be digitally enhanced; or
o have been submitted in previous Life’s Reflections Photographic Competitions.
Entries must be lodged before 5.00pm, Tuesday, 1 February 2011 to:

Life’s Reflections Photographic Competition, ACT Office for Ageing, DHCS, 11 Moore Street, Canberra City.
All entries will receive an acknowledgement of receipt.
Disclaimer
Whilst all care will be taken, no responsibility will be accepted by the Department for any lost, stolen or damaged photographs. The Department will endeavor to return all film negatives and CD/DVD’s submitted after exhibition completion.
Judging
The judging panel will comprise a professional photographer, a representative of the ACT Ministerial Advisory Council on Ageing, the Manager ACT Office for Ageing, and a major sponsor. The Judges’ decision is final.
Entries will be judged against the following:
• quality, resolution, composition and creativity;
• feature of at least one person aged 60 years or over;
• success in portraying a Theme.

The Judges will select photographs for exhibition. The exhibition will take place during Seniors Week (20-27 March 2011) at the Glass Floor Exhibition Space in the Canberra Centre. Entrants will be notified if their images are selected for the exhibition.
The Judges have discretion not to award prizes in any given category if no suitable entries are received. Finalists will be notified by phone and mail or email within 7 days of the completion of the judging process and all award winners will be announced and prizes presented at an awards ceremony on Friday 25 March 2011 at the ACT Legislative Assembly.
Prizes will be presented by the ACT Minister for Ageing, sponsors or such other persons deemed appropriate by the Department.

Terms and Conditions
Use of Images
Entrants grant to the Territory a licence to use (including reproduce and publish) their photograph(s) only for limited purposes related to the 2011 Competition including the exhibition, and for:
• initiatives promoting the benefits of positive ageing, healthy and active lifestyles, the importance of intergenerational relationships or Canberra as an Age-Friendly City;
• promoting this and future Life’s Reflections Photographic Competitions/Exhibitions; and
• related photographic exhibitions in the period March – June 2011 in ACT Government Shopfronts, Public Libraries, ACT Seniors Clubs and in the 2011 Canberra Retirement and Lifestyle Expo.
Entrants remain the owners of all rights in their photograph. Entrants warrant that the images are their own original work.
Consents
Entrants warrant they have obtained the consent of any person/s (photographic subjects) depicted (or, in the case of a minor or person without legal capacity, the consent of the parent/legal guardian or representative), to the photograph(s) being collected, held and used by the Department and that the photographic subject is aware that their photograph may be:
• submitted in this Competition;
• used by the Department in accordance with “Use of Images” above;
• published, displayed or otherwise disclosed to the public; and
• stored in the Department’s image bank;
Entrants warrant they have obtained all relevant permissions required to take the photographs submitted in the competition, including but not limited to any permission required to photograph in or on non-public premises, any painting, sculpture, drawing, engraving, photograph or any other artistic work visible in the photographs submitted.
Entrants indemnify the Territory against any claims and/or costs arising from the Entrant’s failure to obtain any subject consent and/or required permission to take photographs submitted in the competition.

Privacy
The information submitted by the Entrant on the Entry Form is personal information and will be stored, used and disclosed in accordance with the requirements of the Privacy Act 1988 (Commonwealth).
The Department collects information on the Entry Form for the purposes of:
• conducting the competition and exhibition and awarding prizes;
• promoting this and future Life’s Reflections Photographic Competitions;
• promoting future initiatives, programs or competitions by the Department relating to positive ageing, healthy and active lifestyles, the importance of intergenerational relationships and Canberra as an Age-Friendly City.
The Department will disclose an Entrant’s name to the public if their images receive an award and/or are selected to appear in the Life’s Reflections Photographic Exhibition or other exhibitions in the period March – June 2011.
