Short Story Competitions – Sep/Oct/Nov 2011

The Australian Literature Review is running monthly short story competitions for September, October and November.

Stories should be 1,000-3,000 words in length and fit the theme for the relevant month. Stories should be submitted to auslit@hotmail.com as an attached document or in the body of the email. Multiple entries are permitted but only submit each story for one of the months. Stories are due by midnight on the 20th of each month and the winner will be announced on the 30th of each month.

September (theme: International Setting)

Stories should have an interesting setting outside Australia. The setting can be historical, contemporary or future. Although the theme relates to setting, this a short STORY competition – so something interesting should happen in the setting. Make sure you don’t just write a profile of the setting (eg. a character contemplating what the setting means to them or providing general commentary on the setting).

Prize: a book pack (titles below) courtesy of Pan Macmillan Australia.

October (theme: Espionage and Deceit)

Stories should have a strong element of spying, secret infiltration of other people’s activities, or dishonestly associating with people. This doesn’t have to be government espionage. For example, a member of one team, business, organisation, friendship group, or family infiltrating another to gain knowledge or evidence, to sabotage or achieve other goals.

Prize: a book pack (titles below) courtesy of Hachette Australia.

November (theme: Murder)

Stories should involve murder as an important element of the story.

Prize: a book pack (titles below) courtesy of Simon & Schuster Australia.

Entry is free, but you are welcome to purchase one of The Australian Literature Review’s short story collections if you would like to support the site and the authors involved. Further details can be found via the AusLit Publications page.

Writers from outside Australia are welcome to enter to have your story displayed on the site but only writers living in Australia are eligible for the monthly prize. International writers should indicate in your email if you live outside Australia.
Go for it, give it a tweet!
