Comedy and Ballet, two words not often used in the same sentence, but for Les Ballet’s Eloelle new production Men In Pink Tights there is no better way to describe the show.

Director and lead dancer Victor Trevino said Men In Pink Tights is “not your typical ballet”.

“Normally ballet has women so that’s a big difference as this show does not,” he said.

“You don’t normally see a whole bunch of blokes in tutus and pink tights.

“Men also rarely dance on the tip of their toes; it’s normally reserved for the women but we’ll be doing it in this show.

“It’s really different from the usual traditions; it’s not that intellectual, but there’s still good dancing.”

Men In Pink Tights is a parody of both classic and present-day ballet combining magnificent dance routines with naturally outrageous hissy fits by gentlemen role playing both masculine and feminine personas.

Trevino said the show brings a new audience into the theatre.

“Someone who has never been to a dance show will like this - it’s a great show to see dance for the first time,” he said.

“Audiences are normally respectful and quiet and applaud at the end of a dance piece but in this show they laugh and clap throughout.”

He said it was the wives who were often dragging their husbands to the theatre but in this case they would not be disappointed.

“Last time (at the 2007 show Men in Tutus) we had a lot of men who did come with their wives and laughed a lot and really enjoyed the show.”

The show is made up of 12 to 13 dancers from across the world.

“They come from all over the world, Chile, Argentina, the US, Philippines and the UK,” Trevino said.

“They add a lot of individualism on stage and bring different senses of humour.”

Trevino said it was always hard to direct dancers but the fact they come from different places did not make it any harder.

“I’m really looking forward to the show and coming back to Australia - it was a great tour last time.”

Travino came to ballet through a friend who said they should both take jazz dance classes for exercise.

“A lot of dance places don’t have enough guys for their shows so they came to us and said we could take dance classes for free if we did ballet and danced in their show,” he said.

“We said yes and it has changed my life.

“If I hadn’t done that I probably would be earning a lot more as a computer programmer.”

Men in Pink Tights will be at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre on March 13 with ticket available at the venue or by calling 9550 3900 or go to manpac.com.au
