About Great Barrier Reef:
The Great Barrier Reef is an icon, one of the natural wonders of the world and the largest living structure on our planet. This three part television series offers a definitive, in depth portrait of this natural phenomenon. Cutting edge underwater macro and digital time-lapse photography provide new perspectives on this natural wonder.
The first instalment looks at how the reef was created through to the intricate relationships between its inhabitants. This fascinating series explores the full 2000 kilometre length of the Great Barrier Reef, capturing all the magic, from its immense scale to the most intimate detail.
The reef ecosystem covers an area larger than Great Britain; amazingly, only 7% of it is coral reef. The second film examines the interconnected habitats that make up the rest – including the world’s oldest jungle, islands, vast mangrove swamps, huge sand flats and meadows of sea grass, all connected by a giant deep-water lagoon. These habitats are dependent on each other and without them, the reef would not survive. The marine life found in this lagoon is spectacular like the greatest wildlife wreck on the planet – the SS Yongala.
From turtles that migrate thousands of miles across the Pacific Ocean, to whales travelling here each year from the Antarctic, creatures cover vast distances to visit the reef. The final film reveals how the reef is crucially connected to the rest of the planet – and how climate change will affect its future.
