Though chill-out by name, Ministry Of Sound’s chill-out compilation series always lend a cosy-wozy touch to winter days and nights, and the latest instalment – Chillout Sessions Classics – has been rotating in the office non-stop this week.
Where some music compilers may take an extreme retro angle to slapping together predominantly vintage material, Ministry has ensured this time to get as modern as ‘classic’ can get – kicking off the first two of this 3CD collection with various very now acts.
CD1 shines brightly from the get-go with Bon Iver’s Skinny Love, moving smoothly into alt-J’s Something Good (which is something very good indeed), Bibio’s Lovers Carvings, and The Bamboos’ Where Does The Time Go, before bringing us back to more classic gems from the likes of Coldplay, Fatboy Slim, Groove Armada and Lamb. Even Amy Winehouse gets a re-spin, sending chill-out chills down the spine with the sound of every note in Back To Black.
CD2 starts with the lush Islands from The xx, moving into beautiful tunes by Flight Facilities, Storm Queen and even Rudimental (yes, he can be suave). More memorable gems on this disc include Beth Orton’s Central Reservation, Nitin Sawhney’s Sunset, and X-Press’ Lazy, before shifting gear again to the lovely latter-day likes of Lana Del Rey, Bat For Lashes and The Presets.
CD3 also mixes things up blissfully, weaving in and out of artists ye olde and ye new – from Mylo and Röyksopp, to Cut Copy and Foster The People, to Friendly Fires and Florence.
All up, an excellent blend of background music for the office, the housecleaning or even the clubbing comedown session.
