THE BAULKHAM HILLS AFRICAN LADIES TROUPE

The Baulkham Hills African Ladies Troupe is a celebration of women, human rights, laughter and resilience. With a bit of sage advice on hair care.

Yarrie Bangura lost her childhood to civil war. She grew up in a refugee camp in Guinea. Now she is a writer and uni student, with big plans. Aminata Conteh is from Sierra Leone and was kidnapped by the rebels during the civil war. Now she is an ambassador for the United Nation’s Refugee Agency. Big Mama Rosemary Kariuki fled her life in Kenya, looking for a new start. Now a community leader, a “living national treasure”, she knows how to live. Yordy Haile-Michael grew up in the Eritrean army. She is the mother of four amazing kids and discovering her own dreams. They would like to welcome you into their worlds.

These marvellous women turn their extraordinary stories of survival into a joyous theatre of humanity. But this is not just a show about what’s happened to the ladies. With the help of other African women – singers and dancers and actors – they are going to take this great opportunity to be who they want, say what they want, and become as amazing as they can. This is how they celebrate a new beginning in a land of refuge.

LIVE LIVE CINEMA

A conversation between film, theatre, live music and sound design.

Multi instrumentalists, actors and a Foley artist reinterpret the images of two fabulous films to produce a new soundtrack live on stage. The end result is a dazzling, sophisticated production celebrating film, music and live performance.

Herk Harvey’s stunning black and white cult classic Carnival of Souls and Dementia 13 from legendary Francis Ford Coppola are both gems of gothic horror, stylishly crafted on a shoestring budget.

Choose from either Night 1 or Night 2:

Night 1 - Dementia 13 As an eccentric Irish family bickers over a vast inheritance in a lonely mansion, a mysterious axe murderer picks them off one by one. The film rises above the material by virtue of Coppola’s clever editing and obvious flair for composition.

Night 2 – Carnival of Souls (Hit at Sydney Festival 2012) An ideal choice for this creative treatment as one of the films’ key strengths is simply how it looks. The first and last feature by Kansas based industrial film-makers Herk Harvey and John Clifford, it is a deeply atmospheric and beautifully shot “horror” film; blurring levels of reality and existence, the film explores the dark underbelly of small-town life, and creates a world where the familiar and everyday becomes alien and threatening.

“The soundtrack, effects and live dialogue is impeccable.” The West Australian

“Totally engaging and entertaining.” The National Business Review

Night 1 – Dementia 13 Thursday 12 March 8pm

Night 2 – Carnival of Souls Friday 13 March 8pm

SONGS NOT TO DANCE TO

Are there songs you should never dance to…privately or in public? Sydney choreographer and dancer Martin del Amo joins forces with Lismore-based dance artist Phil Blackman to respond to this unusual proposition…and try. Their chosen songs are either too famous, utterly obscure or extremely cheesy. And yet, by choosing to dance to the seemingly undanceable, the artists playfully entice the audience to witness a series of attempts – against all odds – with as much dignity, resilience and humour as possible.

Don’t miss this new dance show which promises to be just as humorous as it is physical.

March 5 – 7

Why should we pick you to go to this triple treat?
