When youâve achieved as much as Richard Clapton has in a career thatâs spanned nearly 50 years, itâs not easy to come up with a first. But thatâs exactly what heâs done with Music Is Love (1966 â 1970), the legendary artistâs first covers album.
The first single, âSummer In The Cityâ, is out now. âSummer In The Cityâ was originally recorded by The Lovinâ Spoonful in 1966, written about an unprecedented heatwave in New York. Richard says, âJohn Sebastian was, and is, amazing. Doing this vocal nearly killed me â Iâve never done a song before with no breath at all! What a song. Itâs been with me all my life.â
The album started out as a deeply personal collection, a way for Richard to reconnect with his musical origins. âThese songs are where I came from,â he explains, highlighting his love for Bob Dylan, The Byrds, David Crosby, Neil Young and Buffalo Springfield.
While making the record, Richard realised that this was something much more than just a sentimental journey. As the world dealt with Trump, COVID-19 and racial unrest, he realised thereâs something happening here⌠âIt struck me that the world needs these songs,â Richard says. The album takes its title from the opening track on David Crosbyâs 1971 debut solo album, If I Could Only Remember My Name. âTo me, that song sums up the album,â Richard says. âMusic is love.â
The songs on Music Is Love (1966 â 1970) are songs that defined an era, including Buffalo Springfieldâs âFor What Itâs Worth (Hey, Whatâs That Sound)â, Joni Mitchellâs âWoodstockâ, Neil Youngâs âSouthern Manâ, The Byrdsâ âEight Miles Highâ, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Youngâs âAlmost Cut My Hairâ, and The Youngbloodâs âGet Togetherâ.
Music Is Love (1966 â 1970) provides an insight into the songs that shaped Richard Clapton as an artist. âI look back at that whole period of my youth and those years 1966 to 1970 and I think, âWow, talk about being born precisely at the right timeâ,â Richard smiles.
Richard selected the songs for Music Is Love (1966 â 1970) with the albumâs executive producer, Terry Blamey, who came up with the idea for the album after he returned home to Australia following nearly three decades managing Kylie Minogue. âI canât think of anyone more suited to singing an album of anti-establishment counterculture songs than Richard Clapton,â says Terry, who met Richard when he was briefly his booking agent in the 70s. Music Is Love (1966 â 1970) sees Richard Clapton return to the Mushroom Group, his first album with them since 1984âs Solidarity.
Richard Clapton was inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame in 1999. He is rightly revered as one of our finest songwriters, responsible for iconic songs such as âGirls On The Avenueâ, âDeep Waterâ, âCapricorn Dancerâ, âI Am An Islandâ, âThe Best Years Of Our Livesâ, âLucky Countryâ, and âGlory Roadâ.
