MORE than 400 historic racing cars and motorbikes in a weekend of non-stop racing? Welcome to Historic Winton.
The Winton Motor Raceway near Benalla in Victoria is revved up and ready for Australia's longest and most popular all-historic race meeting in May.
Organised by the Austin 7 Club, assisted by the Historic Motorcycle Racing Association of Victoria, the event will feature historic racing vehicles from the 1920s-80s, as well as a huge array of veteran, vintage, rare and unusual vehicles on display as well as postie bikes and cycle karts.
A number of anniversaries will be celebrated, including 120 years of the Buick Motor Company, Ford Motor Company, Standard Motor Company and Harley Davidson; the centenary of Alvis 12/50, Amilcar CGS, Triumph, MG and BMW Motorcycles; and 50th anniversary of the Leyland P76.
A new race this year is a Regularity* for N Class "tin tops" touring cars up to 1965.
Austin 7 Club president Len Kerwood said the official anniversary displays and the car park display of "pride of place" vehicles is always a sight to behold for spectators and competitors as fields of cars, emergency vehicles, old buses, trucks and motorbikes stretch around the track.
"It's great to see that in amongst the anniversaries, three Australian milestones stand out - that of the EH Holden turns 60, the FJ Holden will be 70 and the anniversary of the start of the adventurous Redex Trials (sponsored by Redex and others) that saw cars touring the Australian countryside from 1953-1998," he said.
