Morality. Murder. Blackmail. Betrayal. This is the rollercoaster ride that is The Poison of Polygamy. La Boite Theatre is presenting the page-to-stage adaptation of Wong Shee Ping’s pioneering novella this May, promising a performance that will take audiences on a wild journey from the opium dens of 19th century China to the rugged goldfields of colonial Australia.
Taking over the Roundhouse Theatre from May 8–27, The Poison of Polygamy tells the story of Sleep-Sick, an ambitious young southern Chinese man who travels across the seas to try his luck in the Victorian goldfields. We follow his voyage, the choices he makes, the consequences they reap and the people they affect, including the long-suffering wife he leaves behind and the cunning temptress he encounters.
This world premiere presents the classic text through a contemporary lens, adapted in the English-language by Thai-Australia playwright Anchuli Felicia King and directed by La Boite’s new artistic director, Courteney Stewart.
