Real-time strategy games are back in a big way. Australian-based developer PlaySide Studios has a major content update in the pipeline for its intense survival strategy game, Age of Darkness: Final Stand. With it comes a brand-new character and a highly anticipated feature: a story-based campaign mode.
Titled Flames of Retribution, the update is the biggest since Age of Darkness launched on Steam Early Access in October 2021. To celebrate the update arriving on 19 April 2023, we have five copies of the game to give away thanks to PlaySide Studios. It’s one of the best RTS games we’ve played in years, so won’t want to miss this.
In the menacing dark fantasy setting of Erodar, Age of Darkness: Final Stand is an RTS where survival is the main goal. By day, you build an army, explore to gather vital resources, and construct sturdy defences. Once night falls, thousands of enemies known as Nightmares swarm your base, leaving you to hold out for as long as possible.
There are multiple heroes to choose from who lead the battle from the front, each with their own unique abilities and play styles. It’s a satisfying challenge, trying to amass a fortress strong enough to withstand the Nightmares, with lots of tactical options available to you.
The Flames of Retribution update adds the ale-swigging, axe-swinging Merek to the hero roster, adding another dense layer of strategy to the game. Additionally, the update brings seven campaign missions to Age of Darkness, a long-awaited game mode that’s finally here. These missions serve as an ideal entry point for new players, so you can then take on the brutally punishing survival mode. Each mission includes full voice acting, bringing the characters and grimdark setting to life.
When Age of Darkness gets going, it really gets going. Thanks to the technical wizardry from PlaySide Studios, up to 70,000 units can appear on screen at once, meaning the Nightmares truly live up to their name. You better come prepared, or the enemy will quickly overwhelm your defences.
