Il trovatore
In cinemas 8–12 July
A devastating curse rises from the ashes in Verdi’s monumental tale of superstition and rivalry.
Olivier Award-winning director Adele Thomas’s energetic new staging, a co-production with Opernhaus Zürich, sets the story in a Hieronymus Bosch-inspired universe of medieval superstition, where passions run high as Manrico (Riccardo Massi) and the Count di Luna (Ludovic Tézier) compete for the affections of Leonora (acclaimed Latvian soprano Marina Rebeka). Little do they know, Manrico’s mother Azucena (Jamie Barton) has been keeping a terrible secret for decades. Soon a curse from the past will rise from the ashes with devastating implications for them all.
On the podium, Antonio Pappano conducts the exceptional dramatic score, which features the famous Anvil chorus.
