"Til My Song is Done" marks a profound return to Emma Donovan's country roots, dedicated to family and musical legacy.
Donovan is of course a powerhouse in Australian music. She performed with her family band, The Donovans, from an early age before co-founding Stiff Gins with Nardi Simpson and Kaleena Briggs in 1999. Her country-inspired solo EP "Ngarranga" was released in 2009, followed by an ongoing partnership with The Putbacks, a relationship born during their Black Arm Band collaboration. Their recent albums span soul, gospel, R&B, funk and jazz, all imbued with unique depth and perspective.
"Til My Song is Done" revisits Donovan's earliest inspirations. Bluegrass banjo and surf guitar licks energize "Change Is Coming" which also features the talents of Liz Stringer, while "Sing You Over" delivers a haunting waltz with Paul Kelly's harmonica adding a poignant touch. Nostalgic pop shimmers in "Liquid Gold," contrasted by the Americana-tinged "Bringing All the Lovin." Donovan's voice is the constant thread – powerful, emotive, and shaped by a lifetime in music.
The album's core is family – honouring those who came before, particularly her Mother, and celebrating the enduring bonds of shared musical heritage. Songs reflect on themes of identity, with a palpable sense of love and gratitude woven throughout.
