Out of Sight is Guy Blackman's long-awaited return to solo recording, arriving seventeen years after his critically acclaimed debut Adult Baby. With characteristic wit and vulnerability, Blackman offers "a gentle, plaintive record that hides barbs of humour and hurt beneath its intricate arrangements and breezy soft rock." It’s a sophisticated album filled with poignant pop classics. It carries extra significance as the final new artist release from Chapter Music - the influential Melbourne label founded and run by Blackman alongside Ben O’Connor for over 33 years - which now shifts focus to reissues only.
Songs were crafted across three recording sessions between 2022 and 2024, with Good Morning's Liam Parsons handling production duties. Blackman brings drum machines and synthesizers into the mix alongside acoustic instrumentation, while Paddy Mann's string arrangements add orchestral depth throughout. There's a duet with French musician Julien Gasc from Stereolab on 'Let Me Let You Let Me Down' and backing vocals from Sydney's Laura Jean across multiple tracks.
Out of Sight is a moving achievement from an artist who helped shape the cultural scene now celebrating his return. Over three decades, Blackman and O'Connor have profoundly influenced Australian music, dismantling industry hierarchies and championing independent voices. This album serves as both a personal reflection and a cultural milestone, marking the end of an era for the label while reaffirming Blackman's lasting legacy as a songwriter whose artistic integrity and sustained creativity offer rare insight and hard-earned wisdom.
