ABN 7405118 2680
2010 SA Reading Pack Fact Sheet
A FREE reading pack for South Australian parents and babies
The Little Big Book Club (LBBC) is the most extensive early childhood reading program ever undertaken in South Australia and is developed and managed by The Big Book Club Inc., a not for profit arts organisation.
Currently in its fifth year of providing the Free Reading Pack, LBBC has received an additional four year funding commitment from the State Government of South Australia. This funding enables LBBC to continue its integrated approach to lifelong learning and reading.
Reading regularly with young children is probably the single most important activity that you can undertake to develop a child’s ability to read and write. The human brain is most open to environmental influences in the first few years of life with 75% of brain development occurring between birth and the age of three.
Parents often don’t know at what age they should start reading to their children. What should they read to them? How often? How long?
To answer these questions and to support and encourage parents to read to their young children, LBBC offers all parents of babies aged between six and 12 months (over 18,500 babies) a Free Reading Pack. The pack contains a newly commissioned picture book It’s Bed Time by Phil Cummings, Katrina Germein & Susan Betts, It’s Rhyme Time book & DVD, a library bag and a Public Libraries Directory Flyer.
The Reading Pack is LBBC’s first engagement point with parents. LBBC supports the ongoing development of young children’s literacy skills through the Monthly Book Selections program for 0-2 year olds, 2&3 year olds and 4&5 year olds which includes age appropriate books, activity sheets, lesson plans, e-books and other early childhood resources.
More information and resources are available through LBBC’s website - thelittlebigbookclub.com.au
The Reading Packs will be available from the end of January 2010 from SA Public Libraries, Child and Youth Health Centres and outreach centres. To collect the pack, parents or caregivers simply present their child’s personal health record (the blue book issued by Child and Youth Health).
For additional information on The Little Big Book Club Program please contact Sue Hill, National Business Development Manager on (08) 8362 9044 or 0402 000 472.
