Print Email this Share Permalink The annual FLAME Awards, now in their fifth year, reward Australian schools for using creative ways to get more students involved in learning music.
Run by the Music Council of Australia's Music: Play for Life campaign, and supported by ABC Classic FM and ABC Local Radio, the 2010 focus is on primary schools using creative and inclusive ways to get students learning to play musical instruments.
The 2010 Awards are open to government, independent and Catholic primary schools. There is a $15,000 prize pool, supported by philanthropists, Robert and Elizabeth Albert. The National Winner, chosen from the pool of eight State and Territory winners, receives $4,500 cash. The remaining State and Territory Winners each receive $1,500.
The deadline for entries is 6th September 2010.
According to Flames organiser, Tina Broad, "When students are involved in learning and making music together, there can be many flow-on benefits to their achievements in other subject areas and in their social and emotional development, it even helps with things like school attendance and engagement. But even with all we know about how great learning music is for young students, research shows that music education is in decline in many, many schools in Australia, particularly in the primary years. It's like the curriculum's endangered species."
