Sydney Aquarium, together with The Future is Wild, is running a competition for children and young people under 16 years old to design an animal of the future!

Looking for the schools Future is Wild competition? Click here.

 TASK

Design an aquatic animal of the future.

Your futuristic animal must:

Be adapted from a present - day water animal that is currently on display at Sydney Aquarium.
Be scientific – not fantasy. Could your creature really exist?
Live in one of 3 future time zones - 5 million, 100 million, or 200 million years into the future.
Live on land, in air, or in water. You must explain how it adapted to the chosen habitat.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

The more habitats your animal can live in, the better its chance of survival.
Animals in cold conditions may need insulation to keep warm. Fat, or fur, or both, are ideal for this.
Animals that only eat one food are in danger if that food runs out. Animals that eat a variety of foods are more likely to survive.
The bigger an animal is, the safer it is from predators.
Your creature might have to cope with new predators. It might have to move to land – or the air!
Think about its surroundings. If it lives in a hot place, how does it stay cool? If it lives in a cold place, how does it find food, and stay warm?
How does your creature’s body work? How does it move? Sense its surroundings? Survive? Reproduce?
How has it evolved from its present-day ancestor?
Don’t cross two very different creatures. You can’t mate a dugong with a penguin, for example.
Don’t stick on new limbs. A fish might use its fins in new and surprising ways; but it’s not likely to grow new ones.
Animals tend to get bigger. And some – but not all! - move from water to land, or land to water.

PRIZE

We’ll turn the winning creature into a large-scale model and display it at Sydney Aquarium! We’ll create a smaller model for the winner to keep and take home. Plus you’ll receive unlimited entry to Sydney Aquarium for a year! 5 runners-up will each receive an Unlimited Adventure Pass, offering unlimited access to Sydney's FOUR best attractions 'til June 30 2011!

HOW TO ENTER

Collect an entry sheet at Mermaid Lagoon, or download one here.
Carefully read the instructions and design your animal.
TIP: Be as clear as possible, your entry will be judged on your ideas - not your art or writing skills!
Once completed, place your entry sheet in the entry box located in the front foyer of the Aquarium or post to The Future is Wild Competition, Sydney Aquarium Admin Building (at rear of Aquarium) 1 – 5 Wheat Rd, Darling Harbour, NSW, 2000.
When choosing a winner we’ll be looking for how imaginative it is, and how scientific. We’re not scoring artistic skill, or even spelling, though your ideas must be clear and understandable. Age of entrant will be taken into account.

NOTE: Entries cannot be returned. You must be a resident of Australia or New Zealand to enter. Closing date is January 31st, 2011. Full terms and conditions available here.
