2013 Wagner Bicentenary Competition for Composers
The Wagner Society in Queensland Inc invites composers who are permanent residents of Australia or New Zealand to create an instrumental chamber work to celebrate the 2013 bicentenary of the birth of Richard Wagner (1813-1883).
Submitted works must have been composed specifically for the 2013 Wagner Bicentenary Composition Competition, must not previously have had a public performance or have been commercially recorded. They must not have received an award from another competition for composition. The applicant will be required to declare that the music is the applicant's own original work.
Eligibility: The Wagner Bicentenary Composition Competition is open to living composers of any age permanently resident in either Australia or New Zealand at the time of entry into the competition.
Website: www.wagnersociety.com
Deadline for entries: 30 June 2012
COMPOSITION COMPETITION
2013 Wagner Bicentenary Composition Competition, Criteria and Terms of Reference
WHAT IS TO BE SUBMITTED A hard copy score of a musical composition (see Entry Requirements, How to Enter and General Terms)
STYLE OF COMPOSITION
A chamber work for a single instrument or combination of instruments, quoting or otherwise making use of one or more themes from the stage works of Richard Wagner. INSTRUMENTATION Any instrument or combination of instruments. DURATION
Approximately 10 minutes. The organizers reserve the right to award the prize to a work of longer or shorter duration if, in their view, this work is of exceptional quality. WHO MAY ENTER Any composer entitled to permanent residence of either Australia or New Zealand at the time of entry into the competition. CLOSING DATE FOR RECEIPT OF ENTRIES: 30 June 2012
2
PRIZES
$10,000; performance of the winning composition at a public concert in 2013, and a recording of the winning work. Opportunities will also be sought to record and broadcast a number of competition entries.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
1. Information on how to enter forms part of the Conditions of Entry into the 2013 Wagner Bicentenary Composition Competition (‘Competition’). Entry into the Competition shall be deemed to be an acceptance of these Conditions of Entry.
2. Composers must be entitled to permanent residence of Australia or New Zealand at the time of entry.
3. The submitted work must not have been previously performed in a public concert, recorded commercially or broadcast.
4. A score must be submitted in hardcopy. The materials may be handwritten or computer notated but should be at the highest professional standards of presentation.
5. An audio recording may accompany the score. It may be a recording of real instruments or a MIDI version. The limitations of computer playback will be well understood by the judging panel.
6. The composition length is approximately 10 minutes (some leeway is given to composers, and longer or shorter works will be considered in the Wagnerian spirit of valuing artistic quality rather than arbitrary rules).
7. A judging panel will be appointed by the organizers and will include professional musicians and academic staff of substantial experience and reputation. The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence shall be entered into at any stage regarding any decision or the judging process.
8. The competition organizers reserve the right not to award the prize.
9. Entries to be received by 5pm Australian Eastern Standard Time on 30 June 2012.
HOW TO ENTER:
The following materials need to be submitted: (a) Name, address, email address and phone number of composer; (b) Score of work in hardcopy format only (5 copies to be provided by the applicant, with personal identification on the covering form but not on the score itself); (c) (Optional): An audio recording of the piece; (d) Programme notes of the submitted work, maximum 200 words; (e) A short biography of the composer, maximum 100 words; (f) Evidence of entitlement to permanent residence of either Australia or New Zealand (eg a copy of the photo page of a passport or other document);
3
(g) An accurate duration of the work; (h) Declaration of authorship, stating that the submitted work does not infringe on the copyright of any other person or company in any way, or if copyright permission has been obtained, a certified copy of the notification letter from the copyright owners. It is a requirement of the competition that the work submitted will quote or otherwise make use of one or more musical themes from the stage works of Richard Wagner; and (i) Information as to any other previous performance of the submitted work. Applications must be submitted to: The Secretary
The Wagner Society in Queensland Inc.
PO Box 8357
Woolloongabba
Brisbane, Queensland 4102
GENERAL TERMS:
i. By entering the competition, you warrant that the work submitted is your original work and the submitted work does not infringe on the copyright or intellectual property rights of any person or publisher in any way. You also authorize the Organizers to reproduce the composition for any purposes, including those connected with reviewing the composition in order to determine the winner.
ii. All valid entries received by 30 June 2012 will be individually judged by the judging panel. The authorship of specific entries will not be disclosed to the judges before the winning entry is decided. Submissions not received by 30 June 2012 will not be judged.
iii. The organizers will not be responsible for submissions received after this date due to mail failures, or for lost, late, stolen, damaged or misdirected entries.
iv. Valid entries will be judged according to the overall quality of the composition, including appreciation of the relevant work(s) of Richard Wagner, creativity and originality. The prize will be awarded to the entrant whom the judges deem submits the best entry. This is a competition based on skill, and chance plays no part in determining the winner.
v. By entering the competition, you authorize the reproduction of your composition (including the score and all associated materials submitted), including any part thereof, for usage in connection with the competition and related performance, recording and broadcast. Any entrant may be required to fill in a copyright release for these purposes. This provision does not extinguish the composer’s on-going intellectual property rights applying to the composition.
vi. The non-cash element of the prize cannot be transferred, exchanged or redeemed for cash.
vii. The winner will be decided and notified by 31 December 2012.
viii. The Organizers’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into, including in the event of a dispute.
4
ix. The Organizers reserve the right to validate and check the authenticity of entries and enrolment details and to disqualify any entrant.
x. If for any reason this Competition is not capable of running as planned, the Organizers reserve the right to modify the terms of the Competition including the prizes and these Conditions of Entry.
xi. Any tax liability arising as a result of accepting any prize is the responsibility of the winner.
xii. The Organizers will not be liable for any injury, loss or damage of any nature whatsoever (including but not limited to indirect or consequential loss) which is suffered or sustained as a result of or in connection with receiving, taking or using any prize except for any liability which cannot be excluded by law. All entrants release and indemnify the Organizers from any liability which may arise out of the Organizers’ use or publication of their composition.
xiii. All claims and entries become the property of the Organizers.
xiv. The Organizers are: The Wagner Society in Queensland Inc.
