Hot issues you might like to explore
These are just some of issues the world is struggling with at the moment, and trying to find a solution for.  You can probably think of lots more.  The following are just to get you thinking:

Food security: With a booming human population, and a growing scarcity of water and land, we need to find a way of producing twice as much food by about 2050.  Technologies being explored include using our understanding of modern genetics to improve plant breeding; more efficient ways of using water to grow crops; methodology to improve infrastructure and transport in developing nations…

Human health: our understanding of genetics is allowing us to imagine treatments for all sort of human ailments, including ways to enhance our capabilities.  Nanoscience and technology also has a lot of potential in stuff such as drug delivery, diagnostics and repair of everything from bones to brain cells.

Environment: provision of clean water, getting rid of toxic waste, reducing air pollution and greenhouse gases… and so on are just some of the problems that science and technology is trying to help solve.

Remember technology is just using our scientific knowledge to make stuff, which could be as simple as painting a roof white to reflect more heat and make a house more energy efficient (assuming they live in a hot environment) to manipulating genes involved in cancer to treat the disease.
