So Frenchy So Chic (the unofficial soundtrack of the French Film Festival) returns in 2011 with another double-disc compilation of the best hand-picked new music to come out of France. This definitive dinner party music returns with its seventh volume and a solid cross section of all genres ‘French pop’ – and it’s our favourite collection yet!

It starts with the slightly girly, slightly husky voice of Cécile Hercule and leads off with track Roger, hitting that SFSC sweet spot between genres – pop but with just enough edge, or indie but without being twee. Just as sweet Zaz who has been hailed as the new Edith Piaf (minus the drama) with two trad-jazz inspired numbers. But it’s not all chanson and chanteuses. The genre-defying Robin Leduc draws on the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and his childhood days in Nigeria, while making their own alt-groove is General Elektriks with Raid The Radio, a retro-tinged winner that sounds like a lost piece of Stevie Wonder funk laced with modern beats. Also loud and proud in a retro vein is Brigitte with their song Battez-Vous (You Beat) that could have been the perfect 70s key party soundtrack, striking a playful balance between sexy and not taking itself too seriously. Melanie Pain (our french artist for the month, now playing on our homepage) also features. If you want a crash course in French artists pushing the musical boundaries, then So Frenchy So Chic is for you. Listen to a sneak peek of the album here.

To celebrate the launch, we’re giving away 10 copies of the soundtrack – all you need to do is tell us in 25 words or less “Who do you think is the ultimate French beauty and why?â€
