In 1998, a copy of the most important printed work in the English language was snatched from Durham University which sparked a transatlantic investigation involving the FBI and British Detectives. Ten years later, an eccentric book dealer tried to convince the world that he didn’t steal it. William Shakespeare’s Comedies, Histories and Tragedies, better known as Shakespeare’s First Folio, was printed in 1623 and is the only authoritative text of 18 of the Bard’s plays. Copies are so rare that when a new one surfaces, it’s probably either a fake or stolen. Stealing Shakespeare is the inside story of how one man’s encounter with a First Folio turned into a drama of Shakespearean proportions.
