What a sneaky dude this Ben Salter is. Instead of sharing these twelve songs with his other bands, he pockets them and releases a solo album to great acclaim. Master plan!

Stern faced Salter is a man about town in Brisbane. You’ve probably seen his brand of country-influenced rock in numerous bands over the years including The Gin Club, Wilson Pickers and Giants of Science. Recorded in rural Victoria with The Drones’ Gareth Liddiard, these songs aren’t about working the land and riding horses though. Instead Salter takes us riding on the “199 to the Valley”, where “West End girls run and free”. Yes, it’s a bit of a cringe but there is something to like about local tales and it’s a hell of a lot less cringe worthy than those faux English and American accents we’ve been hearing for years.

While alt-Australiana probably isn’t you city slickers’ genre of choice (it sure aint mine), there is enough oddity and abstraction on the record’s production to give you your hipster fix. If that’s not enough, go and buy The Cat on vinyl. It’s out tomorrow.
