Words come and go from languages, but how do we know which words? What if we lost some of the words we use the most? What if they just disappeared, and it was as if they’d never existed?
For 1500 years, led by an ancient dictionary created by the mysterious Caractacus, word hunters have protected English from falling apart. From the Battle of Hastings, to ancient cities they’ve never heard of, to encounters with great inventors, word hunters might find themselves anywhere, any time, dealing with anything.
The Word Hunters series follows the adventures of Lexi and Al Hunter, 12-year-old twins and the current word hunters thanks to a chance discovery of a dictionary during their school library renovations. What begins as a quest to travel back through the past to trace the origin of a common word takes on a new urgency for the twins when they begin to worry that their grandfather, missing for many years, was a word hunter who found himself trapped in the past, unable to return home.
The Curious Dictionary begins Al and Lexi’s word hunting adventure. Travelling back to 1877, they follow the trail of the word ‘hello’ through 1835, then 1100 on to 925, ensuring that ‘hello’ remains in use in modern times. The twins witness amazing discoveries and find themselves in the middle of historic battles and they investigate.
The Lost Hunters continues Al and Lexi’s story with more battles, more action and more words. The hunters are discovering history like never before, as they search for their grandfather – the lost hunter.
Written by Nick Earls and Terry Whidborne, the Word Hunters series is a mysterious, action-packed trilogy for word nerds and history buffs.
