http://www.smithjournal.com.au/blogs/history/tour-of-duty-box-set-giveawayTour of Duty (box set giveaway)War. Huh. Good god y'all. What is it good for? Well, it's pretty great fodder for TV shows, if you like a modicum of ultra-violence, a smattering of nihilism and a script featuring an uncomfortably high number of 'gook' references per episode.
Tour of Duty has more Vietnam-era clichés than you could poke a sharpened stick of bamboo at: a jungle-savvy sarge, a wet-behind-the-ears lieutenant, conscientious objectors, pretty mama-sans, battlefield flashbacks and the smell of napalm in the morning. Not to mention that every new recruit who talks about his girl back home gets smoked in about 20 minutes. But for all that it's a smart, solid and thoughtful look at American military adventurism, with a killer soundtrack from The Stones, Procol Harum, Marvin Gaye, Janis Joplin, et al. Whatever decade you're in, war looks like hell. But when every firefight is set to Hendrix and Cream, this one actually sounds pretty good.
Tour of Duty: The Complete Collection has just come out as a box set (packaged in a tin can) and we have two to give away thanks to Shock. Send your name and address to giveaways@smithjournal.com.au to enter.
