8 Jan 2014
Entries are now open for Whitehorse City Council’s Permaculture Blitz Competition that will land one lucky group in Whitehorse a backyard blitz for their community space.
Whitehorse Mayor Councillor Sharon Ellis said community and neighbourhood houses, faith groups, community organisations and schools were all welcome to enter the competition, running as part of Sustainable Living Week 2014 in March.
“The winning group will receive their very own kitchen garden, which will be designed to suit their site and it will be built by volunteers,” Cr Ellis said.
“This is a wonderful way for a worthy group who serves the community in some way to achieve an edible, fun, attractive addition to their space.”
Sustainable Living Week runs from 10-20 March 2014, and the Permaculture Blitz Competition’s garden makeover is a key part of the week’s program.
Melbourne permaculture design company Very Edible Gardens will provide a team to host the Permaculture Blitz at a location within the City of Whitehorse on Sunday 23 March 2014 from
10am-4pm.
Cr Ellis said a group of volunteers will work together for the day to create the kitchen garden.
“Participants will learn how to build a garden according to sustainability principles, and how to grow vegetables, fruits and herbs,” she said.
Volunteer places are limited – those interested in volunteering should phone Council’s Sustainability team on 9262 6333 or email
andriana.kursar@whitehorse.vic.gov.auTo enter the competition, describe in 25 words or less why your community space would like to receive a Permaculture Blitz and send in photos of the current garden. Entries close at 5pm on Friday 7 February 2014.
