If you're familiar with director Steve McQueen's work, you should be thoroughly prepared for what you're getting yourself in for here. His debut Hunger documented the strike of infamous IRA rebel Bobby Sands, played by relative newcomer Michael Fassbender who had an actor's diet plan to make The Machinist's Christian Bale look a little chubby. Fassbender then re-appeared as a distant New York sex addict in McQueen's incredible/depraved Shame and makes a memorable appearance in 12 Years a Slave – though here the focus is off him and squarely on the incredible Chiwetel Ejiofor, McQueen's new leading man, as Solomon Northup.
