WIN Adam Eckersley Band: The First Album

Closing date
28 March 2014

Thanks to the guys at Universal Music Australia we have five copies of the Adam Eckersley Band's debut album simply titled The First Album to giveaway.
THE term country music is used to describe everything from Taylor Swift and The Eagles to George Jones.

When you hear the Adam Eckersley Band crunching through nimble rockers, fiddle-led stompers, reflective acoustic tunes and blistering country rock, it makes a person reflect on what a broad church country music is.

It also makes it clear that Eckersley is already setting fire to the pews.

“Yeah, well – I wouldn’t exactly say there’s a hell of a lot of pedigree here, but country music was the first music I was playing when I started playing the guitar. I moved a lot, and spent a lot of time out around Cobar, and the far west of New South Wales. Garth Brooks hooked me into the country music thing,” Eckersley said.

“I was digging, doing some country gigs, but I got into the guitar side of things, doing more the guitar hero stuff – Hendrix, Clapton, Led Zep, Buddy Miller, Charlie Daniels Band, JJ Cale, James McMurtry, Jerry Reed – all the older, cool country stuff, with that jam aspect to it. I like it whether it’s blues, rock or country.”

So we can blame it all on his roots then. Which are, of course, impeccable. He writes what ZZ Top might call great “beer-drinking, hell-raising” music.

“A fair bit of my songwriting is tongue-in-cheek, and they’re fairly blokey subjects,” admits Eckersley.

Not bad for a guy who left school at 15, and was a qualified mechanic at 20. He used those skills long enough to purchase his first PA system and a van. Both van and PA saw action in small towns across Australia, with many hundreds of kilometres between them.

Eckersley honed his talent along the whetstone of dues paying.
Fast forward a few years, Adam’s music continues to develop around a wealth of live-gigging experience and songwriting.

At 31, he’s already seen the world and has toured endlessly in Australia and the US. He was back-up guitarist for the McClymonts (he is married to singer Brooke McClymont).

“We were at Country Music College in Tamworth. She was in it that year she didn’t like me very much then,” while developing his own band, the Adam Eckersley Band.

Out of all of this joyful madness, the thrill of playing the Grand Ole Opry, and clocking up a busload of road miles, came the songs. The songs began to emerge during Australian co-writing sessions with songwriters like Lindsay Rimes, Brooke McClymont and AEB bassist and session veteran Scotty Greenaway.

But the new album is also heaving with international heavyweight co-writes, from Adam’s time in Nashville and Atlanta; with the likes of Troy Johnson (who wrote the Keith Urban cut and Dixie Chicks’ hit Some Days You’ve Gotta Dance) and David Johnson (who wrote the Blake Shelton hit Over).

In keeping with the Southern rock vibe, Adam wrote with Jack Williams (who has writing credits with Uriah Heep and Gregg Allman). There are also co-writes on the album with Jason Reeves (Colbie Caillat), Josh Thompson, Keith Burns (Trick Pony) and Jim Peterik (of the 80’s band Survivor of Eye of the Tiger fame), and Christian Bush of Sugarland.

Adam went into producer Lindsay Rimes’ (Lee Kernaghan, The Madden Brothers, The McClymonts) Sydney studio Songrimes to begin the recording process in late 2012. Adam played all the guitars on the record.

Once recording was done Eckersley’s group came together quickly and organically. Adam and bass player Scott Greenaway have been playing together for the past five years in several different bands, one of which included drummer Benny Elliott.

Adam, Benny and Scotty had been doing a heap of shows together before and during the time the record was coming together. Once it was decided an organ player was needed they called on an old friend Dan Biederman, colouring the musical palette with blues, rock, gospel and country.
