Swanee still got music biz nailed

ONE DAY AT A TIME: John Swan, better known as Swanee, will perform at Wests Cardiff on October 11.

JOHN Swan, or Swanee as he is better known, has played a significant role in the Australian music scene since he entered it at 14.

The older brother of Jimmy Barnes, in 1973 Swanee declined joining Cold Chisel as the band's drummer, instead introducing them to his friend Steve Prestwich.

Prestwich was to remain the drummer of Cold Chisel until his death in 2011.

In 1974, Swanee replaced AC/DC's Bon Scott as the lead singer of Adelaide band Fraternity.

He moved on to focus on his own music, releasing Into The Night in 1978.

Swanee's first major chart success was a rendition of If I Were A Carpenter.

He followed up the hit with Lady What's Your Name and Temporary Heartache.

Swanee has released a new album, One Day At A Time, which he will perform, along with all his hits, at Wests Cardiff on Saturday, October 11.

Tickets, available from westsnewcastle.com.au or 4979 1900, cost $20.

The Examiner has three double passes to give away to the show, which starts at 8.30pm.

To win, send your name and contact details in an email titled "Swanee" to ewatts@fairfaxmedia.com.au.

Winners will be notified by 5pm on Wednesday, October 8.
