Free plants on offer in Division 4 giveaway

Ipswich residents can head to Silkstone in March to collect their allocation of free plants from Ipswich City Council.

Division 4 Councillor Bruce Casos said council's mobile nursery would visit George Palmer Park in Sealy St from 8am to 11am on March 21.

"This is our first mobile nursery within the division during 2015 and residents will be able to pick up their annual allocation of plants until supplies run out," he said.

Cr Casos said council's mobile nursery service regularly moved around the city's suburbs to ensure the free trees program was as accessible as possible to all ratepayers.

He said each ratepayer was entitled annually to six free plants from council's mobile nursery to help them green their gardens and the city.

"This allocation is designed to help residents green our city and their homes."

Cr Casos said the program had always proved popular with more than 500,000 trees distributed to the community over the past four years.

"To be eligible for this year's allocation residents should present their current quarterly rates notice or a copy of their landlord's rate notice if renting."

People renting a house through the Defence Housing Authority need to contact them for the relevant documentation or the Department of Public Works and Housing.

"Housing commission residents should present their Housing Commission card and proof of residency to collect their annual allocation."

Cr Casos said residents would be able to discuss their needs with horticulturists at the mobile nursery.

"This will help them to choose the right species for their own garden from a range of trees, shrubs or groundcovers which are grown in council's own nurseries.

"These plant species have all been grown to suit Ipswich's climate and soil conditions."

Cr Casos said the mobile nursery was not the only way for residents to collect their free plant allocation.

"Residents can also collect this from council's permanent nurseries during their opening hours if that suits them better."

Ipswich City Council nurseries are located at:

    Queens Park Nursery - Goleby Avenue, Ipswich - Open Wednesday and Thursday – from 7.30am to 12pm and from 12.30 pm to 3pm and Saturday from 8am to 12pm and;
    Goodna Nursery, corner of Queen and Church streets, Goodna – Open from 8am to 12pm every Wednesday.
