FOLLOWING critically acclaimed seasons at the Sydney Festival and in Brisbane in 2014 the powerful Black Diggers, telling the story of Indigenous soldiers in World War I, will land in Newcastle next week.

Black Diggers will show at Newcastle Civic Theatre on March 20 and 21.

It is directed by the Queensland Theatre Company's Wesley Enoch and written by Tom Wright. An all-male, all-Indigenous cast tells the story of the men who were largely unrecognised by history.

As Australia as a nation marks the centenary of the start of World War I, Black Diggers gives a voice to the Indigenous Australians who fought for their country without recognition.

Banned by their own government from serving in the military, they had to hide their heritage to enlist.

"One hundred years ago, men all over the world enlisted to fight in World War I - including over a thousand Indigenous Australians," Enoch said.

"Discriminated against in their own country, they took up arms to defend the fledgling nation.

"Theirs is a story of honour and sacrifice which had been covered up and almost forgotten."

Black Diggers will be performed in Newcastle on Friday, March 20, at 11am and 8pm and on Saturday, March 21, at 8pm.
