Duphalac®: for gentle, effective constipation relief
Constipation is a very common problem experienced in pregnancy: up to 40%* of pregnant women report some form of the condition. Here’s how you can offer some practical advice for women who are pregnant and suffering the discomfort of constipation…
What causes constipation?
Constipation means difficulty emptying the bowels: the stools are often hardened, and may appear as small lumps. Sufferers may talk about feeling as though their bowel habits aren’t regular, or that stools are “stuck” or hard to pass.
And there’s a range of common causes. These can include something as simple as dehydration or a diet which contains too much processed foods and not enough fibre; or stress and changes to routine.
Some medicines can cause constipation, including over-the-counter and prescription medicines. And inactivity can also be a contributing factor.
Another cause of constipation for women is the change in hormone levels which occur in their bodies while pregnant. The body now contains more progesterone, a hormone which relaxes the smooth muscles in the body and slows down the movement of food through the digestive tract.
And in later pregnancy, the problem can be worsened by the pressure of the growing uterus on the rectum, resulting in haemorrhoids.
Treating constipation
There’s several methods pregnant women can try to address the problem of constipation, including:
• improving their diet by including more sources of fibre, and cutting back on processed foods;
• staying hydrated;
• keeping active; [seek medical advice if the above measures are not helping];
• taking Duphalac®, which has been shown to be both gentle and effective for pregnant women and suitable for the whole family as well, including adults, children and the elderly.
Why is Duphalac® a good choice?
Duphalac®’s active ingredient is lactulose, a sugar which works gently with the body to bring water to the dry, hard stool,helping to bulk and soften it. As the stool softens, it expands and passes gently out of the body.
Lactulose stays mainly in your gut. In the large intestine it may promote the growth of healthy gut bacteria to encourage healthy bowel motions.
Because its action is so gentle, it can take a day or two for Duphalac® users to notice the full effect.
It’s also suitable for pregnant women who suffer from haemorrhoids, where a softer stool can be beneficial.
Duphalac®’s gentle and effective action, and the fact that its active ingredient is a sugar, means you can recommend it with confidence!
