Following its popular and critical hits Cosi Fan Tutte (2015) and its January 2016 Double Bill of The Telephone and Gentlemen's Island, Operantics is excited to present the Australian Premiere of MANSFIELD PARK.
Jonathan Dove's operatic adaptation captures the heart of Jane Austen's timeless novel in a beautiful chamber opera set to Alasdair Middleton's libretto. The short season plays at the Independent Theatre, North Sydney on Wed 20, Sat 23 April 7.30pm and Sun 24 April at 2.30pm.
Fanny Price is the poor, overlooked niece of Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram, raised in the midst of privilege at Mansfield Park alongside her wealthy cousins. Quietly in love with her clueless co ousin, Edmund, Fanny is neglected by nearly everyone, and often treated unkindly by her Aunt Norris.
With the sudden arrival of the charismatic Henry Crawford and his charming sister, Mary,
Fanny watches from the sidelines as seductions, intrigues, and indiscretions threaten the peace of the family.
Directed by Joseph Restubog, with musical direction by Keiren Brandt-Sawdy, Mansfield Park stars
Sonya Holowell as Fanny Price, Samanta Lestavel as Mary Crawford, Jermaine Chau as Lady Bertram,
Jessica Harper as Aunt Norris, Ian Warwick as Sir Thomas, Daniel Folesi as Henry Crawford,
Spencer Darby as Mr Rushworth and Amy Balales as Julia Bertram, as well as Operantics company founders artistic director Katie Miller-Crispe as Maria Bertram and artistic adviser Tristram Entwistle as Edmund Bertram.
Nathaniel Kong is piano accompanist, Emily Stuart-Jones production assistant with sumptuous costumes by Victoria Parsons.
Restubog said it was an exciting challenge to premiere a work from celebrated composer Jonathan Dove and working with such recognisable material from the legendary Jane Austen.
Everyone in the team is looking forward to presenting a unique, emotional, and truthful take to the story and the opera. less
