2016 British Film Festival (ticket giveaway)

Cor blimey: the BBC British Film Festival is back for its fourth year, and there are some intriguing movies on offer, both old and new. Here are our picks for the season, which will screen throughout the country from Tuesday 25 October through to Wednesday 23 November.

The festival is bookended by strong titles, opening with the epic romance A United Kingdom, which is about the controversial 1948 relationship between the King of Bechuanaland (now Botswana) and an English office worker; and closing with the visually spectacular A Monster Calls, about a lonely child’s relationship with a gruesome monster, adapted from a Patrick Ness novel.

In between, there’s a special focus on gritty, social-realist director Ken Loach. A restored version of his breakout feature, Poor Cow, screens alongside his latest, the award winning I, Daniel Blake, a heartbreaking story about an honest labourer navigating Britain's hair-tearing, Kafka-esque benefits system. Rounding this out is Versus: The Life and Times of Ken Loach, which documents the controversy Loach’s depictions of working class Britain has attracted, particularly from U.K. tabloids.

Other highlights include: two new Michael Fassbender features (Trespass Against Us, and The Light Between Oceans); the truth-bending, semi-documentary, The Banksy Job, featuring the eponymous street artist’s self-proclaimed nemesis AK47, a retired porn star and acid-rave promoter; Whiskey Galore, a remake of the 1949 classic about Scots looting whiskey from the English (we know whose side we’re on); and restored versions of Goldfinger,Highlander, Sid & Nancy, and The Man who Fell to Earth, starring the recently departed British icon, David Bowie.

And if you’re looking to do something with your bawdy father, the festival even includes two of the pun-tastic, lowbrow Carry On "classics". Ooh-err.

Details: The BBC British Film Festival runs Tuesday 25 October through Wednesday 23 November, with screenings in NSW, VIC, SA, WA, ACT and QLD. Head here for full listings.

Competition: We have 10 x double passes to give away. To enter, fill out your details on this online form - http://www.smithjournal.com.au/main-content/giveaways
