SHED: Scotty Cam comes to the Grand View Hotel on November 10 to talk to blokes about the best sheds.
Scott Cam raises a toast, in stories, anecdotes and photographs, to the enduring Australian icon, the backyard shed in his book Scotty’s Top Aussie Sheds.
He will share these stories when he visits the Grand View Hotel for a literary dinner from 7pm on Friday, November 10.
Some of Cam’s happiest childhood memories are of spending time with the tools in his dads shed, and today he is the proud owner of two of his own - a city shed and a bush shed.
“There are thousands of people around with a love of sheds like me, and plenty of their sheds are better than mine. Why not run a competition to find the 20 best ones, and whack ‘em in a book for all to see?”
The book shows his top picks including completely kitted out working sheds with all the tools you could ever need; car workshops with gleaming polished concrete floors and equally gleaming cars; games rooms and pinball halls and even fully functioning pubs where the beer flows for free.
The story of every shed and its owner/s, as told by Cam, is accompanied by stunning photographs that capture the passion and the personalities that have gone into creating these Aussie icons.
After completing a carpentry apprenticeship, he traveled and worked around Australia for several years before settling in Sydney in 1990 and starting his building company. In 1999, while having a beer in his local pub, he was approached to do a screen test for Channel Nine's Backyard Blitz and subsequently became the show's resident builder/carpenter, launching his television career.
Cam became the host of the hit reality television show The Block in 2010, and his laid back larrikin attitude has won him millions of fans across Australia, as evidenced by his 2014 Gold Logie award. He has published two successful books on building and home renovations with Murdoch Books: Home Maintenance for Knuckleheads (2003) and Out the Back (2004)
Scotty’s Top Aussie Sheds is published by Murdoch Books and retails for $35.
