In 1918, Samuel Elderton Tolley built a gentleman's bungalow at Nuriootpa in the beautiful Barossa Valley. He grew fruit for his family's winery on the vines first planted by early German settlers in 1894.
Fast forward one hundred years and today the vineyard estate is home to the Ashmead family and the renovated homestead is an elegant showcase for Elderton Wines.
The wines produced from this patch of Barossa dirt are renowned for their richness and vibrancy, celebrated as being traditional examples of the best of the Valley. Whilst the handsome new cellar door is clearly the best place to experience these fine wines, you could be tasting them in the comfort of your own cellar door as we have four mixed half cases to be won!
Originally bought by Lorraine and Neil Ashmead in 1979 as a family home (with the 72 acres of derelict vineyard thrown in for good measure), it's now a grand, yet warmly welcoming destination specially designed to provide a range of wine-tasting experiences.
You can choose a casual wine tasting at the bar overlooking the 1894 Command Vineyard or a more in-depth private tasting and vineyard tour with the people behind the wines. If the Valley's signature wine intrigues you, then a Barossa Shiraz Masterclass will unveil more of its secrets.
Elderton won the coveted Jimmy Watson Trophy in 1993 for their 1992 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and this wine is proudly displayed as part of the only known full collection of all Jimmy Watson winners. There's also an impressive 1500 bottle display of every Elderton vintage from 1982 along with some of the Ashmead's favourite wines from around the world.
For a relaxing afternoon, sip on Elderton wines and tuck into some great platters - local produce of course. If you're interested in more active pursuits with wine as the reward, the swimming pool and tennis courts are available for Commander wine club members whilst croquet and petanque can be played on the lawns - all enticing options.
All in all there are plenty of reasons to visit one of the Barossa Valley's true jewels!
