World Science Festival Brisbane is bringing all kinds of weird and wonderful things our way from 3D-printed bones to newborn turtles and alien-themed orchestras – we’ve got our eyes on a bunch of things in the program. Kick off your weekend on Friday March 23 with a journey through 300 millennia of human history to reveal the secrets of our survival at The Longest Walk: Winning the Human Race. Forget your Metamucil the next morning, as healthy living expert Dr Joanna McMillan gives you the low-down on starting the day right. The nutritional scientist and author of Get Lean, Stay Clean is dishing out some serious brain food at No Guts No Glory on Saturday March 24, where she explains why your gut is the key to a healthy, happy and long life.
Join the war on bugs and gain a new-found appreciation for antibiotics as The Resistance Wars gives you an insight into the dark days of uncontrolled infection and raises some scary questions for the future. As superbugs get stronger will the scientific community crack the microbial codes in time, or will we all need to relocate to Mars after the zombie apocalypse? Speaking of Mars, spend Saturday night at an out-of-this-world cinematic and orchestral extravaganza as Queensland Festival Philharmonic and Voices of Birralee perform the magnificent score from Steven Spielberg’s 1977 masterpiece, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, live and in sync with the film.
Bring things back down to Earth on Sunday morning (March 25) and see one of nature’s greatest miracles up close. Witness baby turtles take the journey from incubation to busting out of their shells live at The Hatchery. Finally, take a peek into the future and see what it holds for us all at A Sporting Chance: Building the Ultimate Athlete, where scientists explore pushing the limits of the body and mind with advances in bioengineering, physiology, psychology and genetics. Who doesn’t want superhuman strength?
