Two years ago, Australian director Garth Davis gave us the critically acclaimed and multi-Oscar-nominated Lion. Now he collaborates again with American beauty, Rooney Mara, to adapt the story of spiritual figure Mary Magdalene.
Joining the ranks of Mel Gibson’s 2004 The Passion of the Christ, Mary Magdalene is set to be 2018’s biggest biblical drama with stars like Rooney Mara and Golden Globe winner, Joaquin Pheonix.
The story takes place in the first century C.E. Holy Land. Mary (Mara), a young woman from a traditional family and established fishing village, leaves to join a radical new social movement.
At the head of the movement is a charismatic leader, Jesus of Nazareth, played by the oddly brilliant Pheonix. He leads with the promise of a changing world and new way of living, something that Mary is yearning for. She seeks an authenticity that is denied by the rigid hierarchies of the day.
As the notoriety of the group is spread and more are drawn to follow Jesus’ inspirational message, Mary’s spiritual journey places her at the heart of a story that will lead to the capital city of Jerusalem. Here she must confront the reality of Jesus’ destiny and her own place within it.
