Trees make our city cooler, improve air quality and provide more habitat for birds and animals. They also improve health and wellbeing, providing a calmer and safer environment.
The City of Sydney has planted over 13,000 trees since 2005 – we already have around 44,000 trees on our streets, parks and City properties – and we're planning for many more.
Our yearly free tree giveaway encourages residents to help us reach our target to increase the urban canopy up to 50% by 2030.
We’re giving away 1,000 trees to City of Sydney local area residents from 10am on Saturday 30 March 2019 at Sydney Park.
You can enjoy a sausage sizzle and chat to City staff about tips and advice on how to plant trees and general tree maintenance.
We've prepared information in the table below about the available tree species this year with short descriptions, the preferred aspect and soil, and how to care for your tree.
We've also prepared a tip sheet for growing trees in pots.
Free trees: Terms and conditions
Free trees are only available to residents who live in the City of Sydney local area. Some streets are located in neighbouring council areas. Enter your address below to confirm you are eligible for a free tree.
Enter your address
Please bring identification on the day that clearly shows your current residential address. Each eligible household is entitled to up to 2 free trees, before they run out. The event is popular and parking is limited, so arrive early to avoid disappointment.
Residents must obtain the necessary approvals for selecting the trees and the planting locations within the property boundary. We hope that you'll enjoy planting and caring for your tree to help us create a greener future for our city and villages.
